Abstract

In monkeys, neurons in parietal and premotor areas have been identified which respond to both somatosensory and visual stimuli with overlapping receptive fields on the body space. Here we show a modulation of the visually evoked potential in humans by manipulating the region of the body on which visual stimuli appear. Spatial gratings projected onto the palm of the hand resulted in enhanced responses during the N1 (150 -180 ms) over those projected onto the back of the hand. Additionally, a control condition using artificial limbs resulted in comparatively lower N1 amplitudes.
